Lake Conroe

Lake Conroe is a 22,000-acre lake located along the west fork of San Jacinto River, in Montgomery County, TX.  The lake has an estimated total length of approximately 21 miles, an average depth of 20.4 feet and a maximum depth of over 75 feet. Though it is called Lake Conroe, only a small area of the lake is actually located within the city of Conroe – most of it lies within unincorporated Montgomery County.

A joint project of the City of Houston, the San Jacinto River Authority, and the Texas Water Development Board, Lake Conroe was built in January 1973 to serve as an alternate water source for Houston.

Lake Conroe is known as one of the best, most scenic fishing spots in the region. The lake is home to several types of fish, which include striped, white, and largemouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, crappie, smallmouth buffalo, and others.

With the Sam Houston National Forest along its northern banks, the lake is surrounded by an abundance of wildlife such as deer, alligators, and several bird species.
