9 Hidden Storage Spots You Didn’t Know Your Home Had
No matter the square footage of your home, trying to find a little extra space to store things is always an issue every now and then. I know the easiest solution is to just donate all those items you just can’t find a place for or to store them in an already packed closet. But there is a good chance there are a couple spots you’re overlooking. Whether it’s a place to display a few kids books or those extra towels your linen closet just can’t fit anymore, this list of places we found will help your storage needs!
On Small Blank Walls
Many homes have unused walls and unoccupied corners so why not put those unused areas to work? Shallow wooden shelves can hold a row of books. You can use shallow picture ledges and simply attach them in a column on an open wall.
On the Backs of Cabinet Doors
Use command hooks on the inside of cabinet doors to hang all your baking and cooking utensils, neatly. Now it won’t take you a decade to find your measuring spoons!
Make sure you are spacing them so that the hanging items won’t interfere with the shelves when the door is closed.
Under Your Child’s Bed
A shallow wooden tray with wheels turns an ordinary train set into a trundle playset. To make your own, attach small casters to the bottom of a large wooden tray or bin. During playtime, your little ones can wheel it into the center of the room. When bedtime rolls around, they can simply stash it under the bed for easy cleanup. Check out The Heathered Nest’s tutorial for adding casters to an IKEA basket.
Above the Toilet
To maximize storage in your restroom, utilize the space above the toilet. Now you have a home for any overflow items from your linen closet.
Under the Stairs
In most homes, the area under the stairs is a big blank wall of possibilities, making it an ideal spot to fit in extra storage. Adding built-in shelves for toys and art supplies is so much better than having them piled high in a basket on your living room floor. For a quicker fix, install a couple floating shelves along the wall for holding books, small bins, and even a few framed pieces of your child’s artwork.
Up Near the Ceiling
If you think you’ve used up every last square foot of storage in your home, it may be time to set your sights a little higher—as in, up near the ceiling. In this orderly living room, two high shelves set above eye level hold magazines, art, and a collection of knick-knacks.
On the Side of Cabinets
Take advantage of the space on the side of your cabinets. Once again Command hooks are a great solution. Hang wire baskets and place dish towels, aprons, or even fruits and veggies in them.
On the ceiling
Keep wrapping paper out of sight but not out of mind by suspending it from your closet ceiling on a simple cradle of wire. It’s easy to reach but won’t get torn or creased.
At the End of the Bed
Adding a storage bench or stylish baskets at the end of your bed is not only a smart way to stash the extra blankets your overstuffed closet can’t hold, but it can also help the room feel polished.
